Flow Charts

General diagnostic steps. Always check the model's tech sheet for exact values and wiring.

Safety: unplug the unit before checking continuity. Take live voltage readings only when you're trained to and it's safe to do so.

Electric dryer: no heat

  1. Is there 240 V at the outlet (both legs, about 120 V each to neutral)? Go to step 2. Check the breaker, cord and outlet.
  2. Is the vent clear and the airflow good? Go to step 3. Clean the vent and lint path, then test again.
  3. Does the thermal fuse have continuity? Go to step 4. Replace the fuse and find out why it blew (usually airflow).
  4. Does the high-limit thermostat have continuity? Go to step 5. Replace the high-limit thermostat.
  5. Does the heating element have continuity (check the tech sheet for its rated resistance)? Go to step 6. Replace the heating element.
  6. Check the cycling thermostat, then the timer or control board output to the element.

Refrigerator: not cooling

  1. Is the unit powered, with the thermostat or control set correctly? Go to step 2. Restore power and set the controls, then wait for it to cool down.
  2. Are the compressor and condenser fan running? Go to step 3. Check the condenser fan motor, start relay or overload, and the control board.
  3. Is the condenser coil clean? Go to step 4. Clean the coil, then test again.
  4. Is the evaporator fan running and moving air? Go to step 5. Check for ice on the fan blade, then the fan motor and its supply.
  5. Is the evaporator coil evenly frosted (not packed with ice)? Suspect a sealed-system problem (leak or restriction). Refer to a certified tech. If it's iced solid, check the defrost system: heater, defrost thermostat or sensor, and timer or board.
